Making Bulk Coffee for Cold Brew Enthusiasts

Cold brew is a growing cold coffee trend in the U.S. that many coffee lovers are embracing. And there’s no need to wonder why. Cold brew is a smooth, rich, yet refreshing drink anyone can enjoy any time of year, especially during spring and summer.

Many enthusiasts take to brewing large volumes to save or serve for quicker mornings or during special events, making bulk coffee more of a necessity than ever.

In this Mystic Monk Coffee blog, we share details about bulk coffee and its importance in making cold brew. You’ll find a great recipe for bulk cold-brew concentrate and our best selections of bulk coffee for cold-brew enthusiasts.

Bulk Coffee Explained

In short, bulk coffee refers to coffee grounds or beans bought in large quantities. Customers who purchase coffee in bulk are usually businesses like cafes, restaurants, or bistros. Some are even offices full of employees who need their regular caffeine fix.

Bulk coffee comes in large bags, ranging from 5 to 50 pounds. At Mystic Monk Coffee, we offer 5-pound bags of bulk coffee beans or grounds for families, offices, and gatherings.

Reasons to Buy Coffee Beans & Grounds in Bulk

There are several benefits to buying coffee in bulk:

  • Save Money on Whole Beans or Grounds: As this article from The Kitchn states, buying bulk coffee beans or grounds is often cheaper than purchasing store-bought grounds. It may be a few dozen cents per ounce, but that can still make a tremendous difference in cost.
  • More to Enjoy, Less Time Shopping: When you know your favorite coffee, buying it in bulk also saves you time. With a larger supply, you’ll spend less time going to the store and stay environmentally-conscious with less shipping and packaging.
  • Enough for Both Cold Brew & Hot Coffee Lovers: Bulk buying means more coffee to go around. Some enjoy a nice, chilled cup of cold brew, while others may see their perfect cup of coffee as a steaming hot mug. Buying in bulk ensures everyone gets enough to enjoy their favorite drink how they want.
  • Cold Brew Beans for High Volume Batches: If you want to enjoy or serve large amounts of cold brew, you’ll need more coffee. Typically, the common coffee-to-water ratio for cold brew is around 1:4. To make a full gallon of cold brew, you’ll need about 220 to 250 grams, which is about half a pound. Increase the amount you want, and you’ll have to add even more pounds.

Fortunately, high-volume cold brews are easy when buying in bulk. That’s what we aim to provide with our bulk coffee for cold brew enthusiasts at Mystic Monk Coffee.

A Large-Batch Cold Brew Recipe For You

Want to use your bulk coffee to make a few gallons of cold brew? Follow this step-by-step recipe below:

What You’ll Need

  • Coffee: Preferably medium- or dark-roasted coffee beans rather than pre-ground coffee. The fresher the coffee you use, the better the flavor and texture of your cold brew. Make sure to grind the beans to a medium or coarse grind, since finely ground coffee isn’t as effective at extracting water.
  • Water: One or more gallons of cold, filtered water. The amount determines how much coffee you’ll need. Usually, the ratio is one part coffee to four parts water.
  • Container: A glass jar or a large pitcher that holds around one to two gallons of liquid. This will be used to mix and store your water and coffee mixture until you get your cold brew concentrate.
  • Filter: Either a large coffee filter, a fine-mesh sieve, or cheesecloth, along with a separate vessel to safely pour your cold brew through and filter out any leftover grounds.

The Step-by-Step Bulk Brew Process

  1. Measure out your coarse-ground coffee according to how much water you want to use. For example, for one gallon of water, you’ll want to use around half a pound of coffee.
  2. Mix them together in your chosen container and stir thoroughly until the grounds are fully saturated with cool water.
  3. Keep the container covered and store it at room temperature or in the refrigerator for around 12 to 24-hours.
  4. After letting the mixture steep, prepare your filter and secondary container, then strain the cold brew coffee through cheesecloth, a fine-mesh sieve, or a coffee filter.
  5. Store in a cool, dry place, and your high-volume cold brew should be good for up to two weeks to serve.
