Who doesn't like having a fresh cup of coffee, full of flavor and crisp in texture with every sip? Sometimes, that's enough to get you through a tough day.
On the other hand, stale grounds can make the rest of your daily grind feel overwhelming, like you just drank a cup of tasteless ink or boiled bean water.
To make sure you always have the best cup of coffee, it’s important you know the answer to one simple question: How long does coffee last?
Because there are so many different types, we'll cover a lot of topics. In this blog by Mystic Monk Coffee, we'll discuss the estimated expirations for coffee in its various forms - bean, ground, instant, as well as brewed.
Learn all there is to know about when coffee expires, so you can make sure your next cup, whether today or a month from now, is just right.
Shelf Life of Dry Coffee

Let's start with the general shelf-life of dry, unbrewed coffee:
Coffee Beans
According to the National Coffee Association (NCA), coffee beans can last from one week (at room temperature) to over three months (when properly frozen). Here's a more detailed breakdown:
- Unopened packages of coffee beans - Fresh until the coffee's best-by date
- Room temp coffee beans - Fresh from one to three weeks
- Refrigerated coffee beans - Fresh for up to 2 weeks
- Frozen coffee beans - Fresh for up to 3 or 4 months.
Ground Coffee
The NCA also states that ground coffee, at room temperature, can usually stay fresh for around one to two weeks. This certainly depends on how well you store them, including whether or not you leave them in an airtight container.
At Mystic Monk Coffee, we send our packages of ground coffee and whole beans to your home in the freshest condition possible. Shop our selection of well-sourced, expertly roasted coffees and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee from the moment you open the bag.
Instant Coffee
Instant coffee has a longer shelf life than most other types of coffee. It is crystallized or dried into solids that are more water-soluble. This process makes instant coffee quick to prepare and gives it a longer-than-average shelf life compared to other coffees, like whole coffee beans or freshly ground coffee.
- Unopened instant coffee - Stays fresh for as long as 20 years
- Opened instant coffee (kept in a dark, dry, cool place) - Remains fresh for as long as three to six months
Shelf Life of Brewed Coffee
Next up, let's find out how long brewed coffee drinks last in the fridge or in the coffee pot.
Drip Coffee

Ideally, you'll want to drink your freshly brewed drip coffee just as soon as it’s finished in your machine. Its flavor will last for another twenty to thirty minutes in the coffee pot or in your cup. Storing drip coffee in a sealed container can give you another hour or so of freshness until it goes bad.
Espresso

Similar to regular brewed coffee, an espresso is best enjoyed just after brewing. This is especially true if it contains a layer of foamed milk. If made without milk, an espresso can maintain its freshness for a few hours at room temp. If placed in a sealed container in the fridge, it can stay fresh for a few days.
But remember,a stored espresso won't have the same taste you enjoy when it is freshly brewed.
Iced Coffee

How long it lasts depends on how you've prepared your iced coffee. Let's figure this out:
- Plain black iced coffee - Expect it to last around three to five days in the fridge, and about an hour at room temperature.
- Iced coffee with cream or other milk - Dairy and other milk alternatives can spoil quickly, so at best it will stay fresh around one to two days in the fridge and less at room temp.
Cold Brew

Cold brew concentrate isn't a diluted extraction of coffee like brewed or iced coffee is. This means it can last quite a bit longer.
Stored properly in an airtight container, homemade cold brew can stay fresh for around seven to fourteen days at refrigerated temperatures.
You can make your cold brew last even longer by freezing it into cold brew ice cubes, which you can mix with your iced coffee or other cool drinks.
Enjoying coffee as soon as it’s been brewed is the best option for overall freshness. While it is possible to make it last for longer using vacuum-sealed containers and cooler temperatures, you may still get a less-than-desirable flavor.
